What is billed as the world's first pure electric 4x4 has made its debut, before going on sale in the UK before any other country.
Oxford-based Liberty Electric Cars has completed extensive testing on its E-Range, which it claims will fill a significant gap in the family-size and luxury vehicle market.
The Electric E-Range has a top speed of 85mph and accelerates from 0-60mph in about seven seconds, with a range of up to 200 miles.
Another world first is the possibility of wireless charging. Instead of using conventional leads and plugs, the car is parked over an induction plate and charges automatically.
The battery can be charged in one to three hours from a fast charger or using the optional induction system. At 75kw, the LEC battery pack is the largest ever installed in an electric car yet, due to the technology employed, weighs less than many lower capacity packs according to Liberty.
Also ground-breaking are the claimed lifespan for the battery of more than 13 years and 300,000 miles – way in advance of anything offered in the EV (electric vehicle) industry thus far.
The Range Rover's existing internal combustion engine is replaced by Liberty's patented high-density Lithium Polymer batteries – two under the bonnet, with a further four under the car – powering electric motors in each wheel, each re-supplying current to the batteries via regenerative braking.
"We are incredibly proud to have proven our critics wrong and demonstrated the performance ability of our proprietary and patented, class-leading technology," said Liberty Electric Cars' founder and CEO Barry Shrierg.
"The Liberty Electric E-Range accelerates from zero to 60 in about seven seconds, reaches a top speed of 85mph, and has a distance capacity of 200 miles on one charge – this is the upper end of the drive range that any current EV is able to achieve. In short, the vehicle enables the consumer to enjoy the power, prestige and luxury of the iconic Range Rover without the cost to the environment."
The production versions of its electric Range Rover will go on sale at the end of this year priced at £150,000. The company has also commenced development on other large, luxury 4x4s, SUVs, and MPVs |

The iconic British brand Land Rover is all set to sport the 'Made in India' tag. Its price will come down significantly as Tata Motors, the owner of the 4X4 all-terrain vehicle, has decided to assemble some of the variants in India against costly imports.
According to sources, Tata Motors is planning to assemble the Freelander 2 in India. Freelander 2 is currently the lowest-priced Land Rover model in India and carries an ex-showroom tag of Rs 33.5 lakh in Delhi. Other models that the company sells under Land Rover brand are Discovery 4 and Range Rover, though these may not be assembled immediately.

Whatcar names the Hyundai Santa Fe Best Value 4x4 of the year.
According to a panel of experts the Hyundai Santa Fe could well be the perfect choice for these adventurous 'staycationers'. The 4x4 has just been named as the 'Best Value 4x4 of the Year' by a panel of judges from the Caravan and Camping Club and from magazines What Car? and Practical Caravan.
What Car?'s Editor-in-Chief, Steve Fowler explained why the Santa Fe is a worthy winner of this accolade: "The Santa Fe thoroughly deserves its award as the best value 4x4. You know the Santa Fe is a good towcar after just a few miles, but it's easy to miss just how good until you consider the price.
"For more than £10,000 less than the XC60, and nearly £20,000 less than the Land Rover Discovery, this is a car that will happily tow the majority of caravans, has room for seven and an enviable list of standard equipment. You can expect 41.5mpg driving solo, according to official figures. That's excellent for a car which weighs the thick-end of two tonnes."
Hyundai UK's managing director Tony Whitehorn said; "We are delighted to win this prestigious award. We know the Santa Fe is a popular choice for owners who like to get hitched, and we have worked hard to make it the best possible package.

The Land Rover Discovery 4, launched in September 2009, has been awarded ‘Britain’s Best Towcar’ in the annual Practical Caravan, The Camping & Caravanning Club & What Car? Towcar awards 2010.
David Motton, Towcar editor, Practical Caravan hailed the Discovery 4’s all round capability, saying: “The Land Rover Discovery 4 is an exceptional car. The old model was one of our favourite towcars, but the new Discovery 4 improves upon it in just about every area. It’s hard to say whether the 3.0-litre engine or the superb ride and handling deserve top billing.
“Most cars picked up far lower scores for practicality than for towing, a sign that manufacturers really need to think harder about towcar drivers’ needs. Land Rover leads the way, though. With its full-size spare, self-levelling suspension, Trailer Stability Programme, huge boot and many more practical features, the Discovery 4 ticks more boxes than just about any other car. It’s the best car in this year’s tests by some margin and a more than worthy overall winner,” he continued.
Anthony Bradbury, marketing director, Land Rover UK, said: “This is a hugely significant award for the Discovery 4 - which was comprehensively updated last year - and a true testament of the vehicle’s overall capability, package and refinement. With seating for seven, powered by the new LR-TDV6 3.0-litre diesel engine which delivers better fuel economy and a whopping 600Nm of torque, and a number of new, user-friendly technologies, it is the ideal towing vehicle and we are delighted to have been recognised in this way by Practical Caravan, The Camping & Caravanning Club and What Car?”

The Yeti first showed its face as a concept at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show before making its world debut in production form in March this year.
And it is a true modern Skoda being completely designed, detailed and engineered by ŠkodaAuto at the Design and Technical Centre in Mlada Boleslav.
Strong, distinctive design is a core Škoda value and the company's cars have been a smash hit in the UK – a far cry from the sad cars the old Skoda company turned out in the Cold War years.
